Yamaha DX200
Yamaha DX 200:
.

The DX200 by Yamaha is a strange little box, Yamaha sells it as a groove-box, something I think is bullshit, don’t buy this thing as a all-in-one groove box! Sure you get one synth track and 3 drum tracks. But the maximum length of the ONE pattern you have is 16 steps and you. And depending on what kind of music you make this is limiting.
But don’t get me wrong, I really like this machine, the synth part is a 6 OP FM synth-engine. If you would like to know what FM synthesis is try google or this link. I won’t explain it here. I’ll only say that the sound FM produces is not warm or analog but harsh, digital, metallic trash!! That’s of course why I like it! Just add distortion!! (No, this time I am kidding, adding distortion just makes it to much noize, even for me!) It comes with a PC editor, opening up loads of more parameters that you can’t access from the control surface of the synth itself. The software isn’t as good or clearly laid out as the microKorg software, but still very usable. It has al kinds of cool features like a morph knob allowing you to morph from one synth setup to the next, or just mix the two or whatever. This thing can really scream, if you are not careful this thing will seriously damage your ears. I also use the drum tracks because they are easy to edit while playing live and they do sound good with a good deal of distortion on top of them. Track 11 is just pure DX200 and Korg Pandora guitar distortion. It’s not a great song but demonstrates what kind of noize freak I am,and the type of noise you can get out of this machine!
